There is no doubt that our cultural landscape has changed. What once was a day set aside for church, Sunday has become another day of doing. Demands upon our time such as the need for families to earn extra income, and the choice now offered for activities that were once considered taboo on Sunday, are a few of these changes that have left the church with declining attendance. Add to that, that many churches are still worshiping the way they did 30 to 40 years ago and it is no wonder that the church has lost its place in the lives of many.
Bringing families closer together while learning about Jesus and our faith is one of the greatest and most joyful things that a congregation can do. Wesley is devoted to teaching our children. We take Jesus’ words to heart when he said, “Let the children come to me, do not hinder them, for such belongs the kingdom of God.” Cross Generational Worship Services bring everyone into the service. These services are family friendly and seek to bridge the age gap by incorporating all ages into a single worship experience. Both inter-generational and interactive, there is something for everyone to do!
In CrossGen worship there is no Sunday school (who has got the time for that and what church has the resources of people to staff classrooms)? Worship is informal and relaxed, and the emphasis is on hearing God’s word in a multi-sensory way. It is kind of like bringing the Sunday school classroom into worship. The use of songs, drama, storytelling, and even the use of games bring home the message of the gospel into every worshiper.
In CrossGen worship, each generation gives and takes from each other a godly presence that is unique to that generation in a way that enriches our worship of God. People in the CrossGen movement refer to this as “the wonder of the child and the wisdom of the elder”. What adult is not touched by a child’s spontaneity and joy! What child does not need the guidance and wisdom of the elder? Together we learn and grow as God’s people!
Where CrossGen worship will take us nobody knows. Wesley Church is at least willing to take risks to reach people, especially families with children. We believe that we need to do church differently. Your suggestions and help are welcomed!
Please call or email the Pastor, (609) 432-5073, email: [email protected] if you are interested in this ministry.
